This is a review of 67 cases, which underwent gastrostomy for esophagoplasty at Dept. of General Surgery of Chonnam University Hospital from January 1961 to February 1966.
Its results reveal that:
There were 32 males and 35 females, their ages varied from 5 days to 72 years, and malignant strictures of esophagus and of cardia of stomach were 32.9%, and benign strictures 67.1% of all cases. Dysphagia, substernal pain, weight loss and excessive salivation were the most presenting feature at admission.
There were recognized dehydration in 77.6% preoperatively and 9.0% postoperatively; anemia in 45.1 % of all males and 37.1 % of all females preoperatively, and 19.4% and 8.6 % respectively after operation.
Lowered total serum protein was observed in 58.7% preoperatively and 13.00/6 postoperatively. Postoperative complications occured in 17.90/o.
